Alert, Canada: The Northernmost Frontier
Alert, Canada, the world’s northernmost inhabited place, is located on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, 817 km from the North Pole. It’s closer to Moscow than Ottawa. Despite harsh weather, it hosts a military radio facility and the Dr. Neil Trivett Global Atmosphere Watch Observatory, staffed by Canadian Armed Forces and scientists who endure months of darkness in winter and continuous daylight in summer. Alert’s unique location and history make it a fascinating remote place with unique challenges and a role in global monitoring.
