MSIS Student in Human Computer Interaction

Hi, and welcome to my portfolio page. This page is designed to help showcase my design, tech, and info science work.

I am a teacher, an adventurer, and a dad. I got involved in HCI after working with a blind student and realizing the value of technological accessibility. I believe that WCAG is the starting point for making information on the web available to everyone, but that it is only a starting point, and that good design will continue to evolve along with technology.

My story: from Maine to North Carolina

I grew up in a small town outside of Portland, ME. After a circuitous route through high school, I moved to Orlando, FL and worked at Walt Disney World as a lifeguard, recreation coordinator, and kids managers. I left Disney to attend Hampshire College where I studied narrative, writing, and learning through storytelling.

After college, I moved to Western North Carolina to work as a whitewater raft guide for the Nantahala Outdoor Center. I spent 3 years as a raft guide, but as the result of an injury, I took an office job in Chapel Hill managing fundraising for a national non-profit.

Later, I would return to the outdoors, working first as a wilderness field instructor with at-risk youth, then as an instructor of backcountry emergency medicine for SOLO Wilderness Medicine School in Conway NH. I traveled the country teaching emergency medicine for 7 years.

In the summer of 2013, I returned to Western North Carolina to take a yoga teacher training and then massage therapy training. I started a massage therapy practice called Active Asheville which I successfully ran for 4 years. During that time, I also began teaching at a massage therapy school.

My process: design for everyone

As a designer, my first question is about the intention of a given interface.

  • accessibility...
  • time well spent...
  • growth mindset...
  • contrast...
  • functionality...
Teaching: from emergency medicine to GRE prep

I have a passion for learning and education, and all of my jobs have eventually evolved into teaching jobs.

  • lifeguarding...
  • wilderness survival skills...
  • emergency medicine...
  • human anatomy, physiology and palpation...
  • human kinesiology...
  • clinical massage therapy...
  • GRE preparation...
My hobbies: adventure, photography, cooking
